Hello, this is my first post! I'm wondering what quail breed to start in my incubator. I love the way Gambel or California Valley look plus I love in NorCal and hunt California Valley every year so I’m familiar with cooking and butchering. But it’s expensive. Really any quail looks good but if anyone has cheap Gambel or California Valley eggs for sale let me know, Thanks!

If you are looking at raising any sort of native bird to the US, most require special permits from your state. However, most people who raise quail for consumption will raise a coturnix quail. They're a domesticated breed that will grow larger than a native breed that's usually hunted and don't require any special permits. Check out MyShire Farm or Kansas City Quail for different types of Coturnix. The most common are Jumbo Wilds or Pharaohs. They get over 10oz, lay a ton of eggs and breed true.

I vote Coturnix too.

I have looking at their stuff. But to me coturnix just don’t seem attractive.
