I am looking at getting a new rooster and I would like one that is kind but will also take care of my hens. I would also like advice on how to make sure my rooster trusts me since my last on was quite mean.
Thank you for your help![]()
My brahma rooster was handled a lot, as were his ladies, when they were chicks. But I also handled my SS rooster a lot and he turned on me at 10 months.I hear EE roos are typically very gentle, as are Orpingtons. I also have a Wyandotte roo who is a wonderful protector and very gentle- never attacks me or my ladies. Though I hear some have not had as good encounters with Wyandottes. Keep in mind that it all boils down to the individual rooster, but some breeds have nicer roos than others.
Very well said. You will note that there is a common theme running through these replies; gentle breeds. While there can always be an exception with any breed, your chances are much higher of getting a gentle rooster if you go with breeds that have a well deserved reputation for being calm and gentle such as Australorps, Orpingtons, Silkies, Cochins, Brahmas, Sussex, and Faverolles. If you are wanting to breed high egg production into your hens, Australorps are the best layers on this list, and Silkies and Cochins are the poorest layers (although they are the best brooders and mothers). Another alternative you might consider since there are loads of unwanted roosters available on the market is to get one that has already proven himself to be gentle. In addition to standard breed roosters, there are some really gentle mixed breed roosters (barnyard mutts) out there as well that would probably work well for you.) Whatever kind of rooster you decide to get, good luck with your flock.
