Hello everyone, I am moving in the near future and I have been thinking really hard on what to do with my beloved pets, my four hens and my two ducks. I dont know what to with this transition, I am wanting to see if I can take my babies but at the same time I dont know if it would be better to sell them and maybe start again later on with new chicks/babies. I just dont know what to do!

My babies were born in Nov 5 of 08 and have been giving me great eggs, they have such great personality and are so sweet and I would really feel sad having to leave them but I am thinking of other tactics in maybe taking them with me where I am going. I am moving back to the north states, distance isnt important to me; any way I can, I will take my pets if I can!

I do appreciate your suggestions and thoughts as it would help me better in making my decisions.

Thank you very much fellow BYC members!

You're moving? After all your hard work on getting chickens legal in Orlando? I'm sad to see you move away. Would it be possible to take them with you? You love them, just a thought. Keep us posted.

Check out the local ordinance at your new location. If it is no chickens you have your answer. Your flock is friendly and young and more importantly you seem attached. They could also be a great conversation starter in your new location. Remembr new babies are fun but you will have to wait for eggs.

I think you answered your own question! If you love and appreciate them that much, take them with you! If there are other conditions, find a way to have someone take them temporarily til you settle in. (?) You stress their birthdate and how wonderful they are...so make sure they go with you! What would you do with them if you didn't take them with you? I'm sorry, but if what you say is how you really feel, I would just make sure they came with me. Just my opinion...since you asked....

Take them with you! just give them acess to water~ Where are you going?

When i transported my cats cross country 2 times , i checked on them hourly in hot states. i gave them ice chips to melt and drink. I only feed them when we stopped for the night and in mourning time ,so they wouldn't throw up.

I am in Polk County, friendly to chickens~ If you need to get rid of them , i am sure all you florida friends will help you relocate them! But please take them!!!

Thank you very much for the thoughts! b.hromada I feel sad needing to move after the hard work put in these ordinances and such but what can you do when things have to change, please pm to know what happened to your areas ordinance as I am not sure.

Back to the topic: Well I guess I should take them with me but one thing does concern me, and its how am I going to do if I am going to temporarily move to an apartment with no yard? I had the thought of maybe puting two or just one hen in a dog crate until we can see what to do but I dont want to feel like I am giving the hen a hard time. What should I do with my duck pair, I could also put them in a dog crate but am not sure what to do?... Is there any one out there who has hens in their own apartments? How do you do it and do you think its uncomfortable to the hens?

I know I have heard of people having hens in their apartments in dog crates or something a little bigger but I am not sure if that is something I should do.

i appreciate the help, and thank you for all the wonderfull help!

If you're planning on eventually get your own place with a nice backyard, see if you can find a local farm that will give them temporary shelter, offer to pay for food and such. If you don't know when you'll be getting a backyard for the birds, try finding them good homes where you are now, and maybe take your 2 favourites to live an inside life. Six birds inside is too much though, I think.

Get an apartment with a balcony and stack up a couple of open cage-type kennels? If it's only a couple months this might work.

Are there any BYC-ers in your new town? Anyone on another chicken forum (is there such a thing?!?). Maybe they can help. Any social group you have ties to that chats online will likely have someone nearby that will offer up couch space, yard space, garage space, rental scouting assistance, loaner vehicles.... it's amazing the goodwill and friendship and help that can be found that way.

Just because I skate with a roller derby team in New Orleans, just about anyone else in the country who skates in another derby league would offer me a couch to sleep on and a team to skate with while traveling (or evacuated), even if we'd never spoken. People in Scooter or Motorcycle Clubs are the same way. I get the same vibe from the BYC group.
