I'm wondering what type of chicken I should get? I need friendly birds and good egg layers ( my husband just wants chicken to have them have more chickens I want eggs. They need to be hardy for winter also.

If I were to choose, I would get Rhode Island Reds(RIR's). They are friendly and make great pets, but can also lay up to 300 eggs or more per year.

I love our Easter Eggers - beautiful eggs, sweet tempered, prolific layers this time of year (three hens, three eggs a day).

I've been surprised and impressed by my Marans (black-tailed buff). They're laying nearly every day (about 5 eggs a week, occ even more), have laid all the way through their first winter without a hitch, and are very curious and friendly. One got out the other day, and my neighbour was able to just pick her up and bring her home.

My Brahma lays less well - slow maturing and lays every other day - but she is an absolutely delight as a chook, very placid and so pretty. The eggs are terrific too, very big, roundish, with large yolks.

Chooks I wouldn't personally get again: Leghorns and Wyandottes. I did love my Barnevelder babies, too, so when they all turned to boys I was very disappointed!

I can't speak for Orpingtons but I had a barred rock and it was very sweet it would here here us coming home and come to greet us and would follow us around and got along extremely well with other birds and there good layers.

The above mentioned Buff Orps, RIR's, and Rocks are all great choices. Cold and Heat hardy and good egg layers.

I have all three!

I just completed my first full year of backyard chicken farming and I have to say, I love my Black Australorps. They are very mild-mannered, friendly and great egg layers. I do find a lot of entertainment from my Golden Buffs (that's what they were called on the site) - sassy, kinda bossy, very cliquey, but not domineering

or bullying. They are great egg-layers, too...and LOVE to dig! I call them my Jack Russells! You'll really love having chickens - they're VERY interesting!

I will look into all those breeds. My husband just wants one kind... Me.. of course want them all lol I'm an animal lover. Also I want to keep each until its has died of old age but he's more " of once there old and worn out they go " how mean right I have a feeling he will lose that battle:)
