If I were to crack open a fertile egg after 4 or 5 days in the incubator - would you be able to see a definite formation? I'm guessing so, and veins and the like, but thought I would just ask the experts to be sure.

hi i know that if u cracked one open after 3 days of beeing under a broody or in a btor you will see the lil blood that started the develop of the chick.

Thanks, here is another silly question then: the embryo forms on the outside of the yolk yes? And not inside the yolk? Sorry for the dumb questions but I'm just trying to be 100% sure that my eggs are not fertile. I dont want to chuck them away if there is any hope that they might be, I have candled and seen nothing, so I've broken a few open and still see nothing. There was no guarantee that they were even fertile so nothing lost if they aren't.

look at that link...they soak up the yolk just before they hatch....so the embryo is outside the yolk...that is why they can go 3 days with no food or water...oh and wait 7 days to candle....but check the link it will answer all your questions
