WHat size opening for exterior nest boxes?

We are building a coop to house 5 hens. THe nesting box will be mounted on the exterior. We are not sure is an 8" opening is enough space for the chickens to clinb into the boxes, or do we need a full 12x12 inch opening for each box? we are planning on 2 boxes for 5 Hens?
any suggestions??
