I did see that and would love love love to get them, but it seems like driving there from NC might be a bit of a stretch! Unless you are able and/or willing to ship?

Well, if I could get them trained maybe they would migrate there, LOL. Sure would save on shipping cost.

Maybe others seeing this would like to comment on how they deal with the problems of reducing their flock. I know some folks like to eat their quail but my little buddies won't go in the freezer. Locally, a few feed stores offer to take them to sell for dog training. Like, really? None of my birds can fly more than a few yards, at best. If they get loose they soon come back looking for food and water since they don't know where to find it except in their cage. I could tell some stories about their adventures roaming the yard and our early attempts to catch them with fishing nets. Anymore, I just let them walk around and wait for them to come back to the cage area. They are docile and don't fuss much, I can just pick them up by hand and put them back in the cage. Afterwards, they act as if nothing happened at all except they head for the water bowl first thing.

I suppose I could advertise on Craig's List. Any suggestions?

It surprises me that there is nobody closer to you that wants them. How many do you have? If I pay for shipping, would that be an option? If not, for sure somebody would take them off CL. And I bet you could get $2/bird.

Thank you for your comment. I will consider selling on CL (as a last resort). I really want to re-home them. No telling what a buyer will do with them. You can probably tell I am a big softie.

Hello! I could pick up some of your quails. What are they exactly? Coturnix quails? Also how many females and males are there?

Coturnix quail, mostly hens in production. They are exactly 1 yr old this month. Some are white, some normal brown tones and some brown that look like English or field quail.

Where do you live? I sometimes travel and you may be along the way. I wouldn't mind delivering them if you are nearby.

Im in Tempe, contact me later so I can give you the address. I'm available after 3P.M. today, and before 5 P.M. on Saturday and most likely all day on sunday. I didn't expect you to reply so fast, so I haven't built the cage yet, they will be in a ferret cage for a day or two until I build it. How do you cool them down in summer, is shade under a tree fine?

Hi,

No need to hurry. Build your cage. Under a tree is ok. I have a few suggestions for the cage.

1. Wire floor, if possible. Mesh size small enough that a cat wouldn't be able to reach in.
2. Not too tall inside. Quail launch themselves straight up when startled. You don't want them to get hurt on the roof. They break their necks, injure their heads or other serious harm.
3. Two or more compartments. You will want to separate the ones that don't get along.
4. Build a small hospital cage for sick or injured birds. This is important. Where do you put a bird that is bleeding and wounded? A hospital cage or two is just right for recovery. I sometimes use a parakeet cage. Pick up several at yard sales.
5. Design the door placement for easy access to food and water containers. Don't let them run out of fresh water......ever.
6. There are several forums on cage design. Look at how other people made their cages.

Let me know when your cage is finished.
