Oh my gosh I just don't get this chicken. She has been odd the whole time I've had her. She's been eating her own eggs, so every evening I bring her inside, isolate her, and in the morning I wait for her to lay her egg. This morning I actually managed to watch her lay. I thought she must be trying to use the bathroom because she made this awful squelching noise and then fart noises, then she laid the egg. And both today and yesterday they look flat! They both have very thin shells even though I've been trying to get as much calcium into her as possible.

Can anyone tell me what the heck is with that?! I've never heard a noise like that come from any of my other chickens! Nor have I ever seen so strange shaped eggs!

How old is she? Sometimes they just get a glitch in their egg laying systems and new layers (mine, anyway) seem to do that a lot. lol. I know you are giving her feed with calcium, but does she have access to oyster shell, too? Sometimes they need more than the feed gives them and having it there to eat at will can solve the issue. I'd bet the noises were simply because the shell was soft.

I have a partridge rock with a similar problem. About every 2 or 3 days there is a softshelled egg (or two) broken under the roost when I go out to let them out and pick up the worst of the poop under the roost first thing in the morning. Usually that day she will lay a double yoker. Then nothing for 2 or 3 days and then repeat the cycle. She has been laying since Christmas, and only laid a couple of normal sized eggs and they have had very thin shells.

She gets layer crumbles and layer pellets soaked into a mash for breakfast and has oyster shell available at all times. The other 6 lay reliably and I get 4-5 eggs a day. Only Misty's are weird. I fear that she will prolapse and there will be long term problems from the soft eggs, but so far, so good. She is a sweet girl, and she has a home with me whether she lays or not.

So far, no problem with egg eating thank goodness.
