I want to get a handful more chicks this year since my original plan for next years layers has totally fallen through (first batch was a total bust, still not sure why - all 8 were runts that never feathered out or grew past a couple weeks old... then a snake had a field day with them one night). I had 6 given to me, but only 3 of those are likely pullets. My other hens are likely not going to be consistently laying by next year (if at all). 1-3 eggs a day isn't going to consistently feed a family of 5 (soon to be six)! I have drug my feet on what I want to get but figured I might as well just get some more from the feed store to get me by for next year then I can reevaluate. I called this morning to see if they had any and they have RIRs (likely production reds technically), Dominiques, Barred Cochins, and Golden Phoenix (?). I have never heard of the Golden Phoenix, and the "RIRs" were what I had issues with earlier in the season. I've been wanting Barred Rocks, but none of those (still kicking myself for passing them up a few weeks ago!). So should i try Doms or Barred Cochins? Decent layers? Heat tolerant? Pros and cons of each would be great! I know with hatchery stock it's not going to be a true representation, but it's my best option for now.

My vote is for the Dominique. We had two but lost one to an owl. We have Beauty and she really is lovely. She is friendly and is easy to handle. Great personality- they are talkative and outgoing but real sweeties. She is a pig with the treats and snatches them right out of the roos mouth, but she is his favorite girl so she gets away with it.

They will lay medium size eggs but she is my best layer and we get an egg everyday.

I hope you enjoy whoever you choose~!

Oh! I just saw your question about heat tolerant. We are in North Carolina and she has been fine in the heat and humidity this summer. Even with all those +100 days in a row- she kept right on laying during it too.

Thanks for the info! I had the sad realization today that we are actually going out of town next week so it's not really the best time to get a brooder going with new chicks :( We rarely ever go anywhere, especially for more than one day/night from home. I don't know why I didn't think about it earlier - I guess I had a one track mind and that was to get more chicks. The even harder part about the trip is that all the people I would normally ask to take care of the animals will be with us!
