Hi All we are stripping the metal off our barn and replacing it with something?!? No idea what to use. We looked at the wood siding at lowes but its almost $30 a board. We tried second metal siding and its $2 a ln ft. We also looked at plywood. but are unsure if we painted it if it would keep it from rotting. Are we missing something? everyone keeps saying lumber is cheap right now but you can't tell from our lumber places. Thanks Crystal

Look at the corrigated or "wavy" sheets of fiberglass/resin mix. It's all the way in the back of lowes by the roofing materials same side as the pressure treated posts). it comes in alot of colors and pretty durable. It comes in 4x6 sheets if i remember right.

New metal is usually the cheapest most durable siding. I wouldn't use it salvaged off another building though (it won't be as waterproof or secure) and I'd be suspicious of factory seconds (if there are defects in the galvanization or paint, whichever it is, you will get premature rust).

I wouldn't use plywood, it will not last super well over time and is a bit spendy.

If you really don't want metal, although as I say it is your best bet in terms of cost-per-lifespan, find a local mill that will sell you rough or milled lumber direct. Or find someone taking down a good-condition barn and use their old wood siding, although you have to 'know your wood' to evaluate whether it's going to be a good bet or not, and some things may be real hard to disassemble and reuse (like if it was originally nailed on green).

Good luck,

Pat

My hubby use to work at a saw mill and knows wood I guess you could say.(better then I do) I was thinking board and battoning it would probably be the best way but we would have to wait till the wood shrinks before we add the stripping. I guess a good breeze during the summer wouldn't be that bad ha ha. We are putting "windows" in it which are just long 2 ft strips of tim that raise to allow air flow. We had thought about using that wavy stuff with those inorder to let light in as well. Crystal
