I noticed a couple of my birds have bubbles coming out of thier eyes. And one hen has a swollen eye. Not shut, it looks like her lower lid is being pulled down and the inside lid is swollen. What is this and how can I help them??
There is an ointment you need--Terramyacin (sp) it sounds like you have an eye infection starting. You can pick it up at TS or Agways or any supplier who has birds or poultry supplies. As a last resort--Pet store or a Vet might sell you some. The ointment needs to be rubbed on the eyes. There is also a form of terramyacin that goes in their water--but you don't want to medicate anyone who might not be sick....
Are the eyes crusting with discharge? Mycoplasma is a very contagious infection (yes, treated often with terramycin ointment in the eyes, as someone else said). It will usually resolve but you have to be careful that they continue to eat and drink, because while their eyes are swollen, it's hard for them to see and get around as well.
This is very important. Listen to your birds when they are at roost. Do you hear gurgling or labored breathing? Look at all the birds. Do any have eyes pasted shut? Check their nostrils also. Are any of their nostrils black in color? Did you add any new birds to your flock within the last few months? Any change in droppings such as watery with white, reddish-orange in the center, runny brown to runny black. Are some standing with ruffled feathers as if they are cold, listless? Have any stopped drinking but still eat?
Are your birds free-ranging. Are any from a hatchery?
Have you lost any birds yet? In other words have any died suddenly?
Swollen sinuses and frothy eye discharge are classic mycoplasma symptoms.
I treated my BO with Tylan soluble, both using it as a eye/face wash and in her drinking water. She was pretty bad - gave up eating and drinking and just stood around feeling awful - and she was looking 99% better after five days of treatment.
Two days further on (off the antibiotics) and she's still looking good, eating heartily, and today she laid her very first egg!
