I have had my hens for 8 years (got them as day olds) and thought I'd love to have a few new girls this year. A pair of hens went broody, so I let them set the eggs. Then I let the other hens keep adding some over a few days. Then I added a couple of duck eggs for good measure.
While looking at candling photos today online I realized the error of my ways. Is there anything I can do ?
I have one egg that is either VERY near hatching of completely black from rot. (I'm hoping it doesn't explode !!!) I have two other eggs that look like they are at day 16 or 17. Then I have another 4 that are either really early or not fertile.
I know i lost one of the ducklings as the egg got cracked, I tried to save it with nail polish, but the hens pecked it open. Nothing quite so sad as a dead duckling embryo -- oh, my, that sweet little teeny duck beak
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do now ? Should I separate the hens and put the egg furthest along under one hen and the rest under the other ? If one hatches but others still have days to go, will the hens tag team to finish hatching the remaining eggs ?
I made them the Brooder-de-Ville in my horse trailer, so they are super safe and have their own place to raise the chick(s)/ducklings.
My thanks in advance for any suggestions.
