What to do with extra Rooster chicks?

Blackhead is a disease that if pretty hard on turkeys, a high mortality rate. It affects chickens too but is generally not fatal. If your flock has blackhead the chickens are carriers. They won't die but will infect any new turkeys you get. If your flock does not have blackhead then your chickens cannot give it to the turkeys.

It is something to be aware of and a strong reason to practice a closed flock. Only get new chickens from a reliable source. I'd consider hatchery chicks about as reliable as you can get. Chickens from auctions or chicken swaps would be a red alert. Personally I don't bring in chickens form any source other than reliable hatcheries or hatching eggs I hatch myself.

I've raised a midget white turkey with my dual purpose flock, hatched the turkey and chicks in the incubator together. I staggered when I started the eggs so they would hatch together. Other than how well that dang turkey flew I had no issues raising them together. This was a midget white, not a broad breasted turkey.
