So here's another question about dealing with the snow cover of winter. I'd like to change the litter in the coop regularly instead of using the deep litter method. We have a compost pile for yard trimmings, but it is buried or mostly buried in snow for most of the winter. So what can I do with the soiled litter in the winter?

I was thinking that maybe putting it in a big trash can until I could dump it later would work, but that would probably really stink. Maybe I could put it in the municipal trash, just like I do with the cat litter and wintertime dog poop?

Any ideas? Thanks!

Get a couple of plastic trash cans and shovel it into those. It will build up heat and break down, over the winter. You can use it in gardens come spring.

You can just throw it on your compost pile as you normally would; in the spring the snow will melt and composting will continue as usual.

You could put an ad on Craigslist and someone will gladly take it off your hands! I do this for the rabbit rescue organization and get about 6 large bags weekly. You can spread rabbit poop immediately as it doesn't burn but I compost it anyway.

Gosh, it would drive me nuts to have that much organics leaving my place. It's warm enough here most winters that the compost keeps going. If not, I just keep heaping it up and it takes off in the spring. I have a 3 bin composter and it takes a year to fill one bin as with the summer heat it cooks down quick in the summer.

Our compost pile is about a football field away from the coop. DH has a giant toboggan he'll load up with chicken poo & hay to drag down & put on top of the snow-covered compost
