When you take on the responsibility of owning animals sometimes you have to make hard decisions. As Shadrach said if you can't take him with you, the only responsible thing to do is put him down, sorry.

If it's possible that it is the feed like Ashlierami mentioned, try wetting it (if it's a crumble type). See if that helps. It does sound like you have a hard decision.
