Hi.
Our chicks are 2 weeks old today, we have 25 Cornish Giants (white) and 5 Brown Leghorns. The 5 Brown Leghorns are for eggs, and the 25 will be for meat.
We're currently feeding them duck starter - as it is not medicated and was recommended to us by the farm store.
We're told we need to change their food in a couple weeks - changing to Pullet Grower for the meat birds. Is the pullet grower ok for the brown leghorns to eat as well?
We're also told that in the future we need to change the layers feed to layers food, but since they're all in the same coop and we're not quite wanting to divide the coop for 5 chickens..are there any alternatives out there to feed to both the broilers and layers when they're older?
The 30 chickens have a large treed and grass area (roughly 2500sq ft), so they'll be foraging outside during the summer. Can we simply make our own mix of food for them that is a balanced diet for both types of birds? If so, what would it consist of? Oats? Barley, etc?
Thanks for any help.
