this is my first year having turkeys and i was wondering what is the best material to use for a nest can i just use straw like i do for my chickens or do i need to use something different?

We use wheat straw, they grow alot of winter wheat here in eastern, NC so the price is right. I know a couple people around here that swear by pine straw as they call it (it's just pine needles). I tried it before and it mats down pretty quickly but if you have pine trees the price would be zero so you could just change it out often.

Mine seem to like pine shavings. It is not pine needles. It's wood shavings. If I use straw or hay they just kick it out and lay in a bare box. Thats not what I want so shavings works great.

We use straw usually. After a soaking last evening we had no fresh dry straw so one hen is now happily making do with some old mosquito netting!
