I am new to BYC and chicken raising. I already have 2 hens but I am looking to expand because I have more space now and I'm even looking to expand again. I can't decide what type of chicken I want but I do know I want a hen that lays very often and is friendly to my other 2 hens. Because I'm a beginner I'm also looking for a hardy chicken that I can easily raise. I see a lot about silkies but I can't decide if they are right for me. Do you guys own silkie hens? What do you think of them? I am also leaning towards a Rhode Island Red, but I want something a little more "flashy" I guess. I've also heard a lot about Australorps, but like I said I want something "flashy" you could say. Tell me what you guys think!! Let me know!

A silkie is a nice hen but does not lay well.

I have some Buff Orpingtons, Australorps, Rhodies and Wyandottes.

All of them are good layers but the RIRs were quite cross. My favourites are my Wyandottes they are gentle and are egg laying machines! Especially the silver laced variety.

Good luck with your selection, Ian.

Personally I have comets or new hamshires they are called and they are very hardy for the winter I have had many bunches of these and lasted about 3-5 years! Very nice and great addition to a family!
