What type of chickens do we have?

1 rooster to 8-10 hens is a good ratio. Any more than that will lead to overbreeding.
The 'rooster' to hen ratio of 1:10 that is often cited is primarily for fertility efficiency in commercial breeding facilities.

It doesn't mean that if a cockbird has 10 hens that he won't abuse or over mate them.

Many breeders keep pairs, trios, quads, etc

It all depends on the temperaments of the cock and hens and sometimes housing provided.

Backyard flocks can achieve good fertility with a larger ratio.

We have a friend that has 1:5 roo/hen ratio. None of the hens are beat up, sure the roos have their moments, but it always end quickly. They have about 40 hens now and 8 roosters. 4 of the roos were all raised together and they are always hanging out and very chill. 3 are young and still figuring life out. and 1 is a very mature male and he rules the roos. the youngin' leave him alone. Head hen beats him up though :lau it really just depends on the roos.
