I've read several articles about how two-legged predators

are preying on backyard chicken flocks. With the standard hardware cloth on the run and a lock on the coop door, how could I upgrade my flock security? I mean, anybody with good wirecutters can cut an entrance into the run or snip the lock on the door while I'm away.

I'm wondering if anybody has experience in their community with this kind of theft or has tips about preventing it in the owner's absence (without a dog on the premises -- sorry, I'm allergic.) Thanks!

We use chicken wire, electrified fence strands, and a bungee cord to hold the door closed.

Nobody has ever tried to steal our chickens.

We have a standard combo lock on our coop door and my backyard has a motion activated light near the coop. I'm south of you in Clark County and I've never heard of any incidents involving theft or malicious mischief with a backyard flock. You would really just need to weigh the actual risks versus the expense.

My best deterent is my 2 big dogs. My coop is set up on the back side of my property and no one can see it from the road. I do have hotwire around the base but it's to deter 4 legged critters (including my own dogs) more than the 2 legged variety... I have never had a problem with uninvited people on my property, but we do keep a chain on the front gate.
