I have seen the ladder type roost and also a flat type ladder roost. What type of roost works best.
I am currentlu using the flat ladder type and only about 12 chickens use it the other 25 just huddle in a coner of the pen or roost in the nesting boxes ( is this ok) I have 37 chickens 30 are 6 weeks old, 3 are 10 weeks and the others are adults. I am new to this and need some help

I use a flat ladder type roost. I don't think the chickens mind, I get no complaints in the little "complaints box" in the corner of the coop.

it makes it easier to put a droppings board under and still have floor room. I have a pic on my page. I would not however let chickens roost in the nest boxes... yuck. you will end up cleaning it out all the time or else having poopy eggs, double yuck. put the nest box lower than the roosts. and close them up till they are ready to lay.

I use a flat roost (2X4 on the flat) as i am in a cold climate and by using a flat roost in the winter, the birds can cover their toes completely when they sleep to help keep them from frostbite.

I used 2 x 2's I noticed both of you are using wider roosts. That might be why some of mine dont seem to like the roost. I will have to block off the nest boxes also

Mine all seem happy w/ the 2x2's, and they are BR's, already getting pretty big @ 16 wks. Though they all fight for the TOP - so if you can just build one height, that would probably be helpful.

I'm in NorCal, doesn't get that cold here (frost bite is not really a fear).

DH just built the coop for the girls (3 BOs) and he used an old wooden closet pole (you know, for hanging coat hangers on). The girls seem to love it.

Best of luck w/ your coop building!

Thanks for the photos, Connie. I was going to take down the ladder to our old tree house and turn it into a roost. Right now I have a couple of 2X4s that the hens and pullets roost on, but will need more roosting space as the pullets grow and wanted to make the new roost with a droppings board. I like your design very much and will copy it!
