I'm new to raising birds and I just found my first snke trying to get my birds. Can anyone tell me what kind it is? Its about 3 or 4 ft long!

Can't see it's head, so don't know for sure but based on it's length and markings, I would guess a ratt snake. I just killed one about 4 1/2 ft long. It had a strangle hold on one of my young guineas who was still roosting in a chicken coop with it's chicken mama. I see quite a lot of these here in middle AL and usually end up killing one or two each summer. What happened to the snake in the pic? Snakes are about the only predator I have now that I have some good guard dogs. I hate snakes even though they are pretty creatures.

The pic is kind of hard to see the marking clearly but it looks like a rat snake. Did you get a pic of the snake's head by chance?

I googled rat snake and they appear to be good to keep around in that they keep most other snakes away and eat rats! They are very docile from what i read and people keep them for pets. I don't like snakes but its good to know some are docile and harmless except to the birds of course!
