all the roosters on my GF's family's farm have this type of comb... the hens just have what look like real tiny single combs
is it just messed up genetics( not sure there are many breeds that aren't in their ancestry, and up till a couple years ago, they were pretty badly inbred), or is it actually a type of comb...

It's a modified Pea Comb and he is most likely out of a Pea and Single comb cross.

but if they were heterozygous for pea and single, wouldn't you expect to see some single combed roos and some pea combed hens popping up?... they've never had any peacombed hens(till they bought a couple EEs last spring, but they keep them separate, not in the same gene pool as the rest of their chickens), and the last few generations of roos all have had combs like the ones shown... the last single combed roosters they had hatch are going on 3 years old now...
