I am in the process of converting one of our barn stalls into a coop. I had the chicken coop in a shed but this spring when the snow was melting it got pretty wet inside there. My question is what does everyone use for flooring? Its dirt/sand in the stall now but im wondering if I should make some kind of floor or just leave it as is. Im afraid if I raised the floor that might make a perfect area for mice etc to nest. Does anyone have any idea's? Thanks!

All of mine are just dirt. I have heard of people using linoleum(sp?), but when you are starting with dirt you would have to pour cement or build a wood floor first.

I think you will be fine with dirt. Since I started from scratch, I was able to incorporate a floor into mine. My floor is 1/2" ply with the cheapest lanoleum 12 x 12 squares I could find! I would have gone with a 4 x 8 sheet but I couldn't find them at the local hard ware store where I live so I went with the squares. Good luck with your decision - send some pics, keep us posted.

We have sand in our run and the girls just love it. In the coop we did put linolium (sp?) for easy cleaning. The sand provides grit and when it rains it doesnt get muddy, it drys out quickly.

My first coop, 8'x4', is half-inch plywood. I sealed it with some leftover deck sealer. We had one of those big blow up pools and I cut out a big section to line the floor.

My bigger add-on coop has a sealed plywood floor. I will keep the birds water in the smaller section with the pool plastic to keep the large coop dryer. I'm installing a droppings board under the roosts in the larger section which I will scrape off each day. This will really protect the floor from the bulk of moisture.

Marine Grade 1" plywood, sealed and linoleum covered....straw and shavings on top.

Easy as heck to clean out.

I haven't built mine yet but have all the stuff and am ready to start. I found a roll of lino in one of the storerooms, left from the previous owners and I intend to use that on the flooring. Because of what I've read on here about chickens getting poo everywhere in the coop, I'm even thinking about lining the walls with it

We are planing to use horse mats on our floor over plywood that has been painted . Like you simply, we are still in the gathering stage for our coop , so far we have not spent a cent ( altho its been alot of weekend helping other people clean up yards to get supplies lol)
