After taking a four year break from chickens, we decided we missed having these little ladies around. So, this year we decided to get just 3 after doing extensive research and finding this is the smallest a flock should be. Got the chicks from our usual local, family owned feed store who has been in our community for close to 100 years. Never once have we gotten a rooster from them, in the years past flock. This time though, I wanted more diversity in our flock, so instead of all Barred Rocks, we got an Australorp, a RIR and Barred Rock. I have no experience with any breed outside of Barred Rocks, but I am almost positive the Rhoady is a roaster, and I question the Austrolorp. Both of these birds are about twice as large as the Barred Rock, but maybe that is normal? I also believe the RIR is starting to get saddle feathers. The RIR is bossy, steps on the other birds, likes to perch up high and this morning started making a loud clucking sound. The Austrolorp is more quiet, friendly and not mean like the RIR, but is still twice as large as the Barred. These birds are all about 10 and a half weeks old. We do not want to disturb our neighbors, so would like to know before both or one of these chickens start crowing at the crack of dawn. I really appreciate any help.

Welcome to our FUNomenal Flock!
:wee
Pull up a roost & enjoy your time here!
I don’t see any male characteristics....they are both Pullets! Cute! ❤️
Thank you so much for your quick response. This puts my mind at ease. I guess she is just the head of the flock and is big and bossy. Our previous flock were all Barred and so loveable, we were never able to figure out who was in charge. So, we are not used to the RIR characteristics, personality and feathers.

You have one black and red pullets, both very beautiful. :love
Thank you for the confirmation. I feel a lot better now with at least 2 people saying they are both pullets. We are about to go out of town and did not want any cock-a-doodle dooing going on while we are gone. Otherwise we may end up coming home to one less chicken.
