i use blueseal brand grain. either layer mash or crumbles . the crumbles is only 1 percent higher protien than the mash and i havent seen a difference in egg production and the crumbles are more expensive. so does the one percent really matter. production wise.

Of the choices available to me, I have had the best success with Purina, either Layena or their starter feed with free choice oyster shell, which is what I am using now. But, I only have Dumor, Purina and Nutrena easily available where I live. There may be better options where you are.

Purina Layena has worked great for us. The chickens look great, their shells are really strong and their yolks are a rich dark gold color.

I like Purina pellets.

I usually buy my feed from TSC and when I first started with chickens, only Dumor brand was available, but they phased out Dumor and started carrying Purina. I like it a lot better and it's a little cheaper.

I feed Purina, and two of my Delawares girls have started laying at 17 and 18 weeks old- however I am also generous with treats for extra protein-

I have been a Purina fan for years- have fed my horses and cats Purina and they all did so well that I never questioned what brand to use for the chickens.

Blue Seal makes an "Egg Maker" crumble. It's formulated for egg production and egg size. It's around $10 per 50lb bag here (MA). I got 5 large eggs weekly out of each chicken through the winter. The girls are big and bright eyed too.
