Murray McMurray included this chick with our box of 25 Red Star girls. They're a week old today!

Can you help us identify the breed? What about gender?

Hi!

To me it looks like a Ancona or Speckled Sussex.

As for gender..............I don't know....

Maybe some of the experts on here can give you some better advice.

Collin.

My experience with Speckled Sussex is that they have more browns, golds, and mahogany. It looks like a Silver Laced Wyandotte to me. Gender is a tough guess as they don't auto-sex and the rose comb takes some time to discern a gender difference. In my experience, a LOT of the free exotic chicks are roosters.....

I think SLW. I had several of them in my McMurray variety pak. See the little yellow tufts by the ears? I think that's what identifies them as SLW. Mine at 3 days old....

I knew I would be wrong......I'm sitting here thinking what it could be and the only breed I don't think of is a Silver laced Wyandotte

Oh boy, oh boy...if it's a boy, when do you separate that roo away from the girls if you don't want any breeding attempts?

The boys will start trying to breed long before the girls start to lay. Boys also get red wattles and combs before the girls. You'll have a good couple weeks, even months, before you need to worry about fertilized eggs
