How long after contact would your birds start showing symptoms of an upper respiratory infection?

I just lost my outdoor flock to what we believe was an URI, but my 2 babies that are in my bedroom under the heat lamp had minimal contact with the yard that the sick chickens were living in.

How long until I'm sure I'm out of the woods on this one? 1 week? 2 weeks?

Thanks!

Scrub everything down with bleach and let the coop air out for no less than 3 weeks to be safe. If you have a run, you may want to remove the soil and put down clean sand. That's what I've read in extension office publications. It does sound drastic, but if your other birds all died, it's better to be safe than sorry with your two youngsters.

Thanks. I sprayed everything down with bleach (inside and the run) also the back porch an all of the places the other chickens hung out in the yard.

I'll do it daily for the next couple days until I'm satisfied everything is dead, and then I'll do it with the oxine when it gets here.

Just wondering when (if) I would see symptoms that the babies are infected a well?

It's my understanding that the incubation period for most respiratory illnesses is very short, a few days will tell whether the infection has spread. Certain age groups are more likely to be affected as well, especially point-of-lay birds. In really young birds, exposure may have taken place but they may be asymptomatic. It really depends on what type of respiratory infection you're dealing with. Did you have your state vet do a necropsy to diagnose the strain of infection? Knowing is half the battle, as they say, and that would be very helpful information where your younger birds are concerned.
