I thought so too, i have had birds get minor frost bit in the past but never this bad.. im in indiana, we just had about a week of really fridgid temps, a little bit ago. the coop is completely closed off and has heat lamps.. thats why im so confusedLooks like Frost bite. Where are you?
By 'enclosed', do you mean there's little to no ventilation for moisture to leave?I thought so too, i have had birds get minor frost bit in the past but never this bad.. im in indiana, we just had about a week of really fridgid temps, a little bit ago. the coop is completely closed off and has heat lamps.. thats why im so confusedi hadnt noticed it til today because it was nice so i let them out to roam
Its a gazebo with windows and a door, i do not know the temp in there but its not extremely hot , i can step in there and it feels pretty comfortable. Thats good to know about ventilation, i could maybe crack a window to it if its not enough?By 'enclosed', do you mean there's little to no ventilation for moisture to leave?
Do you have a temperature reading of your coop?
Heat lamps and little ventilation help cause frostbite.
They need 1 sq foot of permanent above head ventilation per bird in the coop. Its a gazebo with windows and a door, i do not know the temp in there but its not extremely hot , i can step in there and it feels pretty comfortable. ill do that, thank u!They need 1 sq foot of permanent above head ventilation per bird in the coop.
It should never be comfortable to you in the coop in winter, wean them off the heat lamps, and if you really need to, turn on only one at night.
Don't touch his comb, but keep a close eye on it.
This little guy usually is very lively , We have heating in the coop, so its not cold in there. Whats wrong with his comb? Ge has been slow and lethargic all day as well. Usually i cant hold him, but he has no issue with it rn.. View attachment 4040501
Can you post photos of his feet too?I thought so too, i have had birds get minor frost bit in the past but never this bad.. im in indiana, we just had about a week of really fridgid temps, a little bit ago. the coop is completely closed off and has heat lamps.. thats why im so confusedi hadnt noticed it til today because it was nice so i let them out to roam
Unfortunately he passed today, i had brought him inside to care for him and warm him up , i was giving him electrolyte water, and this morning he was barely moving, and he died shortly agoCan you post photos of his feet too?
Being on the lethargic side is concerning.
I'd work on hydration, getting fluids into him. Electrolytes or sugar water. Once drinking, then offer some wet mushy feed.
I'd definitely open up the coop some to get more ventilation.
I'm so sorryUnfortunately he passed today, i had brought him inside to care for him and warm him up , i was giving him electrolyte water, and this morning he was barely moving, and he died shortly ago
i will definitely do what i can for ventilation, i dont want anything else to happen to any other birds.
