Spring is here and everyone is picking out ducks to add to their flock. Last year I acquired some Muscovies, some Cayuga mixes and this year I got Ancona ducklings. They all have different personalities and the Muscovy seem the most friendly and "in your face" for me and they work well in a suburban setting. However I realize not everyone likes ducks for the same reason.
Every duck has its own qualities whether its, personality, friendliness, egg production, herdability, broodiness etc.

What is your favorite duck breed and why?

Right now I have pekins. I bought them from Metzer's as filler for the goslings. I bought them because they were to have good egg production and are very good for meat. I figured if I did not like the eggs or having ducks in general I could butcher them. Well my family and I like the eggs so we kept them. Now I am really interested in Silver Appleyard ducks as they are really good for egg production and meat and are pretty as well. I am also interested in trying Muscovy ducks as well. I would love to have some broodies on hand and I would also like to try Muscovy meat. Who knows what I will end up with this year. I have a bunch of pekin duck eggs in the incubator right now. They are due to hatch May 8th. The last batch hatched a few days early. We shall see!
