Hi again! :) I had a quick question about one of my hens, in the last couple of weeks she's developed a raspy wheeze that is heard when she clucks or breathes heavily. It's the hottest part of summer in Texas right now, and I've been trying my best to keep all the ladies cool (ice in water, fans, etc.) and suspected she might just be fatigued. She has no visible obstructions in her throat, but it sounds like she has drainage. Apart from this, and an occasionally pale comb, she's behaves normally and lays every day

Come to think of it, she had a respiratory illness last winter, could she have possibly had a relapse? Any information would be greatly appreciated!

here's what she sounds like

How hot is the temp in her coop? I would try to get her to a cooler spot. Slightly cool water on her legs may help. She is breathing very fast and has rales or crackles. How does her crop feel right now? Is it full and squishy or firm with food? Respiratory diseases can be chronic and come back during times of stress. During a molt, very cold or hot weather are times that may happen. Did she have any bubbles in her eye, or swollen eyelid when she was sick before? What did you treat her with?

It's crazy hot most of the day, but there's a fan in the coop positioned towards the nesting boxes, I'll definitely make sure she stays cooler. Her crop is squishy and full at the moment. Actually, she is partially moulted on her belly/chest area, I assumed it was because of the heat, but I guess if she's feeling unwell that could be bad news :[ she recovered from infectious coryza, but never experienced eye bubbles or swelling eyes (her brother had both) and still shows no symptoms. I only treated her with VetRX and supplements, and she still recovered well! I'll get her and all the others cool asap, and hope that will solve the rales, thanks for the help!

How could you tell that it was coryza and not some other respiratory disease? Did she have swollen eyes, pus, or thick foul smelling nasal drainage. There are viruses with milder symptoms. It is hard to know what you are dealing with unless you get some testing, or a necropsy on a dead chicken, done by the state vet lab.

true! I assumed it was coryza that she was exposed to because her brother had all of the symptoms, and she was with him constantly. She managed to get through with only wheezing and sneezing for a while, no stink and no swelling. I never got the chance to send in a test or do a necropsy for the brother unfortunately (rip Truffle). However her dry wheeze then was different from the crackly one now.
