iF YOUR birdS are going thru the molt
they will have fresh feather shafts protecting new feathers

all feathers have a whiteish shafts on them when the new feathers come out of the foilcle hole in the skin

the birds sometimes try to reach the shaft to peck it off
very normal birds
just make sure they have the prpbiotic recipe to eat

probiotic wet mash
2 qts of dry crumbles
4 qts of milk either sweet or sour
1/2 cup of plain non flavored yogurt

feed 3-4 tbsp per day to them
keep unused mix in frig
or cut the mix down to what is needed

I enjoy writing as I have had lots of experience and several decades of raising and breeding chickens
I have a lot on my web site
as 60 yrs of experience and learning more each day

I have gone by what these folks are asking

I agree! When I have lots of molting birds, I usually give them 22%layer pellets I get from the co-op that contain animal protein. Helps alot! When I can't afford the extra $$$ for that feed, they don't re-feather nearly as fast.

When they are molting can i give them broiler feed to up their protein? I use this to bulk up my roos as soon as they are identified before they hit the freezer...would this be acceptable or should i keep something else on hand? Do I feed it to all of them even if not all of them are molting or do i need to separate them????

I would say yes feed it as it is higher protein
don't feed corn except to the ones your going
to process
