How many square feet should you allow per bird? I would much rather allow them to free range but since we are only on a 1 acre lot it is not feesible at this time.
I know with chickens it should be 5 square feet per bird when it comes to chickens but not sure on the turkeys.

And how high off the floor should the roosts be? Will 2x4s work? What about nest box dimensions?

I've read turkeys are cold-hardy. Should I insulate the coop? (I'm in VT, it gets pretty cold here)

Other considerations when building a turkey coop?

If I recall, I believe it is 25 sq ft per bird for turkeys. We always give much more than that, as they will wear that amount of space down quickly. Our roosts are 4 foot off of the ground and we use trees for a natural roost. We do not coop our turkeys, as they refused to go back to it once released into flight pens. I have never lost a turkey to winter or cold, so I would agree they are very cold hardy. That does depend on proper acclimation though.
