I bought my seven RIR's on Friday afternoon and they have been in the coop/run since then. When can I start letting them out to free range so that they will return to the coop in the evenings and not run off.

I seem to remember years ago when I had chickens that it was about three days but I want to make sure. Thanks.

Well, I answered my own question. I let them out this evening for a few hours and they just went into the coop for the night and all of them are on the roost.

They are about seven months old and are the only chickens on the farm. They stayed fairly close to the coop while they were out. One of the baby kittens tried chasing one of them though. We do have cats around so I will have to watch that.

I mean completely free range. They will only be out when someone is home so they will be in their coop/run most of the day unless I'm off work on my weekend and then they may be out longer. Thanks for the input.
