When could you tell what sex your Brahmas were?

I’m interested to hear about others who have raised Light Brahmas and any differences you noticed between the growing pullets and cockerels. I’m currently raising 5 that I bought sexed as female from Cackle Hatchery about 4 weeks ago. Everything I find say that I must be patient because they are slow to mature so I have no idea what I’m looking for over here.

They all grew tails and feathers at the same time but, I notice differences in their coloring. Two have very light colored collars and the rest have black collars. Another 2 have combs with a little bit of warm orange coloring the outside border of the comb. The smallest is the noisiest and makes sounds like a tiny car engine trying to turn over. The bravest has a lighter colored collar but no oranging comb or wattle growth. Their tails are all pretty similar. All the general indicators of sex seem to conflict each other in every bird. Needless to say, I’m lost!

So I’m hoping that y’all can maybe tell me how you determined your Light Brahmas sex. Other than laying an egg or crowing, did anything else crop up that screamed pullet or cockerel?

I have an LB from TSC and one from McMurray. The TSC one’s comb got red in it and is comparatively large at maybe 2 months of age or so. Yesterday I noticed some saddle feathers and he is about 3 months now. The McMurray one ... purchased as a pullet but ... she has always been the largest of her non-LB siblings, though they are somewhat evening out. She is lighter in weight than the TSC boy. Her comb did get red in it but has stayed small. She is also 3 months and I haven’t noticed definite saddle feathers. She is also the first to have a ‘voice change’ and at first sounded rooster-y, but now totally reminds me of a clucking hen. Not sure that’s really a good gender indicator, but I’m hoping!!

Also as far as color pattern, hatchery LBs can be across the board. The TSC guy is fairly correct in coloring, but the McMurray one has leakage all over to the point she almost looks laced or something.

Can we see some picks it would help us help you both

I was just mentioning my LBs for comparison for the OP. The TSC LB I’m pretty confident is a boy. I can post a pic of the other one ... if I can remember to take my phone to the coop 🤦‍♀️

Got some! Both are about 3 months.

This is the TSC LB I’m sure is a boy -

This is the McMurray LB I purchased as a sexed female. I thought her cone turned more red early on the it ought to ...
