My pheasants are looking kind of ratty and you think that they would molt before breeding season.

What species? Unless they were induced by lighting, most will molt when the breeding season is over - usually July through September.

Diet, housing, and weather conditions can affect their appearance as well.

They are kept outside so that is why they are ratty. This will be their second year so they should be getting their full adult colors in. I have Reeves, Red Golden and Lady Amherst.

Sounds like what you mentioned could all be factors.

Time and space will get them looking better.
