when do pullets lay their first egg?

Be sure to not take others' (including my own) experiences as precise. There are other factors such as temperature, amount of light, type of feed, and whether they are just plain in the mood for laying.

Hi Wayne,

I like your line of "If women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy"

. How about this:

If women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you chicken-friendly.

I have 5 Barred Rocks that hatched August 1st '08.

The first one began laying at 21 weeks...and the last one started laying at 26 weeks.

I just got a new order of 16 chicks last Thursday (see list below) and I can't WAIT for them to begin laying!!!! This is SO much fun!

I don't know if I did the right thing or not, but I switched mine to layer formula at 20 weeks (coincidentally, my first one started laying that week...but I do think it was a coincidence). Mine are laying beautifully - I'm averaging 3.75 eggs per day (that is an actual calculation based on the last 30 days from 5 pullets).

I hope this helps, but maybe someone with more experience will chime in here for you.

Hi Holly,

The sig line is a tag line from the Red Green Show. It was a Canadian program that is sometimes rerun on Public Television stations in the US.

When I first saw it, I wondered what kind of idiot would watch this stuff. I found out. Me.

Anyway, I am chicken-friendly in addition to being pretty handy around the house.

I give mine laying pellets from about 18/19 weeks, as i know they are due to start laying in the next 1-2 weeks. Maybe this is incorrect, but I've never had any problems and their eggs are small but fab from day one. Good luck. x
