when do they lay?

I know this is just my ignorance showing...but...when do hens lay? I mean do they lay during the daylight hours or at night?

My hens usually lay in the morning, but some cary on until the afternoon.

thanks, I am a newbie at this. I was planning on letting my four hens free range during the daytime, but then they may lay any where right?

My ten hens freerange most of every day. They all come back to the coop when they need to lay and lay in a nest box. Just put fake eggs in the nest and they'll get the idea. I've never had a problem with them laying elsewhere, except for the day the coop door closed accidentally and they all laid on top of a bale of straw under the coop, nice and neat in the same place.
