I am fairly new to all of this, being the mother of 3 buff orps and 2 white plymouth rocks, all 12 weeks old. My question is a simple one.....when should I expect the buffs to start laying? I find different answers everywhere, so I figure the best place to find a correct answer is to go to the experts! Can anyone give me some info? Sure would be appreciated!:)

It can happen from as early as 19 weeks old to around 30 weeks old. At around 18 weeks old you will notice they get loud, start paying attention to a nest, and their combs will REDDEN, and they will squat when you get near them instead of shying away. These are all signs that they are ready to begin. At 20 weeks old start paying attention to their behavior and you will learn when they are going to start laying. Some may sit a nest a few times before they actually lay their first egg.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply. Some times they act so goofey. I have a feeling it will be hard to figure laying times with these 5 girls. I have one that seems to squat all the time and has done so since she was a little chick. No one shys away. They jump in my lap. And they can all get loud. 1 sounds like a duck, 2 sound like they are grumbling, 2 soung like they are mumbling. Can't wait for our first egg! Thanks again:D
