Hello friends,

this is a pretty self explanatory question : When is it safe to let drakes out of the drake jail ? How do I know ?
I had to jail my drakes. This was their first season - they went nuts starting in March. They have been incarcerated since the end of April. They are all hatch mates and they don't fight at all, but it's been a while and they are almost done molting into their winter feathers. Is it safe to let them free range with the ladies now ?

Thank you ! 🦆 🦆 🦆

How many drakes and how many ladies? If you have 3 drakes and 4 ladies, its not going to be safe to let the drakes out as they will over mount the ladies

The ratio is bad. 5 to 5. But before the season started they mated here and there and were all right. The ladies liked it, did the head bobs, you know. It was when spring hit that they went bonkers. Especially because they picked one of the girls and kept chasing and mating her, almost exclusively. I was hoping when the season ends they might get back to "normal". Also I read that the first season is the worst, so maybe next year they might calm down a bit ?

The younger the drakes the more energetic they are. But I doubt yours are going to go back to their pre season level of activity. Be prepared to have to fence of a separate area for your drakes and just let one at a time out with the girls, on rotation
