So the other day my friend hatches 10 baby silkies! the cutest little things.
The next few days pass and there is only 5 left. We believe its the rats that are eating the babies.

We plan on moving them to my house where it is much safer and a better coop. But when is it best to move them? The mama is really mean at night, but at least they are together. Also there are 3 mama's taking care of the 5 babies. Should I take all 5 mama or just the meanest one to take care of them?

I've only had chickens for 2 seasons now, but I lost a few chicks this year to the other hens who will kill the babies in their first few days if the chicks wander away from the mother hen while she is still hatching eggs. That is why when the first chick hatches, I put Mom, the eggs, and any chicks and separate them into a dog crate with cardboard around the bottom. Mom can sit on the eggs 2 days, then after that I remove the rest of the eggs so she can devote her attention to the babies. By day 3 or 4 I open the cage if Mom is ready to venture out. If not I do it again the next day. I keep feed and water inside the dog cage until they leave. I watch the behavior of Mom for the first day to make sure if she is protecting the babies. I had to remove one recently because she was pecking the baby repeatedly and not watching it. Another broody adopted it because her chick was the same age.

ohh ic, All the mommy's were protecting them last time when i tried to get a look at one of the chicks. There was one mama that was extra mean tho and she even popped one of her own eggs trying to bite me :(

Should I take them during the day or night tho when I move them into crate? Its kind of hot here, so I might sho my flock out of the small coop run and use that. I only have 5 chickens anyways :) and they can roam the back yard.
