when to give grit?

You are supposed to give grit when the chicks start eating things other than chick feed.

I just gave my 18 weeks-old Leghorns the "chicks grower grit" bought from the store yesterday. Before that, they have been just pecking at the sand in the dust bath box, scratching on the dirt floor in the run, no special grit was given. I have been feeding them some fruits, oats, pumpkin seeds, and a handful of rice as treats for weeks, will they be having digestive problem since they didn't have the "real grit" (aka small gravels) all this time? The girls all seem fine so far with an healthy appetite, but when I saw the size of the grit yesterday, I got worry.

Grit is needed to be fed when feeding anything more than crumbles with no gravel available naturally.
