When to open nesting boxes?

My chickens are 10 weeks old. I know the hens won't start laying until 16 weeks or later, but when should I uncover their nesting boxes to allow them to get familiar with them? I don't want to confuse them on where they should be roosting... Thanks for any advice! :)

Hello!

I keep my nest boxes blocked off until the hens start squatting. Depending on the breed, that can start as early as 17 weeks. When you reach out to touch one of your pullets, she will do this hard squatting pose. That means she is reaching maturity, and it's her submission pose to allow a rooster to mate with her. She will do that for you too, because you're the boss in her eyes. Once you see that, it's a good idea to make those nesting boxes accessible.

At least, that's how I handle my new flocks. :)
