My first order from MPC really sucked. In my first order, I ordered two welsummers, two SLW, two BO, two JG, and two australorps.
One of my welsummers arrived very weak, always crying, and looking pretty sad. I kept emailing MPC for help, but got little response (even though it says to contact them about weak chicks, and they can help), and eventually she died. Since it was past their 48hr arrive alive guarantee, they did not refund her or even acknowlege that she died. My other welsummer turned out to be a rooster.
One of my australorps also died, but closer to seven to nine weeks. She never developed well, and was always very gangly looking. My other australorp turned out to be a rooster. Of my SLW, both turned out to be roosters. SO, out of ten chicks, eight lived, four turned out to be roosters. That left me with four pullets. That is less than HALF of what I ordered. At this point, I was so disheartened with MPC that I decided to cut my losses, get rid of my roosters, and just move on.
I had already rehomed other birds before I learned I had so many roosters. Needless to say, I was supremely disappointed.
So why do I love MPC? Well, I don't know what happened between that very first order and my consecutive orders, but because MPC was the only hatchery I knew of that did such small orders at the time, I ordered from them again. Man am I glad I did. I have since ordered four additional times from them, and have been pleased with every single order. They have been exceedingly acurate in sexing the chicks, and I have been very pleased with the quality of the birds I recieve. No, they are not show stock, but they aren't hideous either.
Since that time, I have ordered 22 chicks over four orders, and have only recieved one that I suspect to be a rooster, and one I am still on the fence about. My other birds have been beautiful, and for the most part have had very good personalities. I lost my flock last year to a predator, and so I have started anew this year with mostly birds from MPC. This is my big girls at like 4.5 months fighting for mealworms.
