Where to keep chicks?

My five week old chicks play around on our fenced north lawn and then go into a dog crate where I've put up a roost of sorts to sleep in at night. Once they all get situated I lock it as I don't want stray cats having chicken dinner.

Incidentally, mine are in our spare bathroom; the cats "own" the garage.
