Where to place the heat lamp?

So I read that in a brooder box you should put the heat lamp on one side and the other side would be so the chicks could go over there to cool of if they got to hot. But I'm planning on using a kiddie swimming pool for my chicks, I was going to hang the heat lamp right in the middle. Is that okay? How will they cool down? Will they just go to the sides to cool of if they need to? I'll keep an eye on them to see if there to hot or cold.

If you put the heat lamp in the middle. when they are too hot, they will stick to the border of the pool - You'll be able to tell, trust me. If they are too cold, they will huddle underneath it in a big pile
