This is my first time posting and I apologize if I'm in the wrong section. We are wanting to start off with a small flock of 4 chickens due to zoning laws. My question is, when I look at purchasing them, every online store wants a minimum purchase of the same type of chicken of usually 5 up to 25!! We can't have that many chickens legally so it isn't going to work for us. Can someone direct us to a site or a store that ships, where we can purchase one at a time in case we want different breeds of chickens for my husband is interested in a colorful egg basket. I should mention we do know what breeds of chicken we are interested in for our needs as a family (child friendly for we have 4 children, egg layers over meat, and so on) Thank you!

Start with CL. You can often find older chicks or even ones just starting to lay so you eliminate the chance of getting a rooster and you don't have to wait 5 long months for eggs.

With kids EEs are a must (green eggs).

Where are you? If you go to your state's "Where are You?" post, you might find someone with extra pullets to sell. I would trust their management more that some randome person off of CL.

Do you have a ma/pa type feed store in town? If so you can contact them a lot of times they place weekly orders so adding small 'extras' is not a big deal to them, and sometimes they will even order in small numbers and just get some chicks for floor inventory...

Most online sources won't sell small numbers because they can get chilled during shipping, the more they ship the better the chicks are able to keep warm...

Another option is to purchase the larger number from an online hatchery and then sell the extras off when you get them. You ought to be able to at least get your money back, maybe even turn a profit on each chick, especially if you order pullets.
