We have seven bantam cockerels (20 weeks old) and 10 bantam girls. We would like to raise some babies next year, but don't know which, if any of the boys is good enough to keep. I am thinking the black cockerel in my avatar (also in comb contest) is nice, but don't know about the rest of the boys. We also have 8 regular size hens, so I'm guessing 2 roos is plenty. Any opinions would be most welcome!

If your not breeding to show, pick the one that's the sweetest. If you want us to tell you which is the nicest quality show wise, you'll need to take individual pictures of them from the side.

But out of all of them I'd say the black one is the least cochin-like. Honestly if you just showed me his picture I would guess he was a booted bantam. He's petite and his cushion(what cochin tails are called because they're like poof balls) is more of a regular upright tail. The buff on the right looks the most nicely round from the front, but I'd have to see a picture of him from the side.

Thank you for your info. I do have side pix of most of them. I guess I assumed they were all cochins because thats what we ordered and thought they were just maturing differently. I realize I'm not likely to get SQ birds from the hatchery, but thought it would be best to keep the best ones that we do have. I would like to keep the option to show open if I ever got anything good.

These two buffs are very similar as far as I can tell.

The frizzle looks really homely to me. We have a red frizzle pullet that is very nice. Here he is with the buff on the right in the above photo:

Here are a black, a splash and a blue:

And lastly, the black that I think is pretty: "Hot Stuff" (He thinks he's pretty, too!)
