Though actually a hybrid and not a breed, I recommend Black Sex Links (Black Stars) which are friendly and hardy, egg laying machines. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds and hybrids), and they have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 eggs per hen per year.
As far as standard breeds go, I would recommend Australorps. They are extremely hardy, calm and gentle (my children and granddaughter made lap pets of them), and excellent layers of large brown eggs.
The breed I would personally not recommend are Naked Necks (Turkens). This is not a reflection on their egg laying or eating qualities, but on their lack of aesthetic qualities. I like breeds that are at least reasonably attractive to look at and Naked Necks in my personal opinion are a breed that only a mother could love.)
