Western Kentucky
I live in Kentucky and lost some of my chiickens and am ready to start a new flock. The ones I had last year where older hens someone sold me and some I hatched out. The ones I hatched are Buff Orp. My layers that done the best where red sex link. I was thinking of gettin a pure breed chicken. What would you recommend for the Western Kentucky area? If I can't find a good pure bred egg producer I will get some more sex link birds. Looking for a brown egg layer.

I take it you were not that happy with your orps? How about an australorp? Or a dominique? I have some of each of those and am super happy with them. Good egg layers, friendly, not good at escaping etc

Easter Eggers are one of the best, They have small combs and wattles
if winter hardiness is a issue. They can be several colors so they make
a colorful flock, Hardy friendly and thrifty chickens
Reliable layers of large to extra large green/blue eggs.

No the orps are fine. They where a later hatch and won't start to lay till this summer. I don't run lights so they are not laying yet. I am wanting to go with a pure bred of chickens. I want one bred in my pen. I was just woundering if the orps. can do a good job I only have 3 hens and a roo. I was wanting more than that. I just wanted to know if i shoould buy more orps. or go with a differant bred.

Delawares! They are an excellent dual purpose bird with a great disposition - very friendly, easy to handle, AND the breed could use some discriminating breeders to help bring it back. See the Delaware thread under Breeds/Genetics!
